There’s no place like home …

Dress: Victoria Beckham | Clutch: Gifted | Heels: Jessica Simpson

There is truly no place like home but where is home for you, us? Being a military family our home has been four different states over the last six years! I know that sounds insane and it has been (a little ) but overall it has been one the best experiences in our lives. Next summer our home will be in a whole new country! I’m still trying to wrap my brain around that one. I shouldn’t be this surprised because my husband did say he would show me the world when he proposed, and he sure is!

The Sarah life (as I call it) is basically me packing up my “tents” and following wherever God sends Abraham or in my case, Jacob. It most definitely has its challenges but the blessings truly surpass the struggle. My favorite inheritance of perseverance through this military life is the the framily we have made. Friends who become family away from family (as we say in the military) make it easier and that much better.

Of course, we always and firstmost have each other. That saying “home is where the heart is” has become prevelant for us. Each other is all we have sometimes. Wherever we can be together is our home. However, home for us did start in California. We were born and raised there and so it’s nice to go home as much as we can.

In one more day clicking my heels to go home will be a reality and my heart can’t wait!

Provincial Life

Today we barely made it to church but we made it! Again, I’m super glad that I have outfits picked out here and there because this morning was a struggle to even get out of bed. We also took our sweet time getting ready. Between the girls at the tail end of their colds and Jake and I at the beginning of ours no one really was motivated. It was an amazing message at church so I’m proud we didn’t miss it. We did miss out on a beautiful day to be outside because we slept it away, inside. Hoping it was worth getting the needed rest as our Dinsey trip is only two days away …

Did my beast of a purse giveaway who I dressed up as???

DIY Halloween Costumes Part 2: Mysterious & Spooky Closet

Sunglasses: Marc Jacob | Dress: Nordstrom Rack | Boots: Nordstrom Rack

Hello friends! I want to start by thanking all of you for your support in following and reading my blog! I can see how many are reading from all around the world now! It is so fun and it brings our family joy! THANK YOU!

If you read last night’s post then you know which tip I’m following with today’s look. If you haven’t read it yet, that’s ok! Just click here to catch up. In thinking of what characters I could resemble somewhat naturally I thought this one was fun. It is also a little more dark for my taste so I put my own spin to this creative adventure, starting with the boots. For this character I technically should be wearing black tights but if you remember I am dressing up with what I already own. So, since I don’t have black tights ( I prefer leggings) the boots were a perfect compromise. They still keep me in character, warm and I can wear this anytime.

I may have been wearing these boots for the last two days now but it is for good reason. They are that comfortable and warm. Staying warm while dressing up for Halloween has always seemed to be the challenge everywhere we have lived. Well, minus Miami duh. Thankfully, I am no longer living in that disrespectful heat. Texas does have its own heat but it is nothing compare to Miami. It does subside right about Halloween time and it actually gets cold here.

So if you need a costume that is warm and from your closet try substituting with boots when you can. They can be a bit warmer than tights or leggings. By the way I scored these boots for twenty-three dollars during a “clear the rack” sale at Nordstrom Rack. I got them in grey too, lol.

Do you know who I am? The title of this blog post is your one clue!

DIY Halloween Costumes Part 1: Family Traditions

Hey y’all! It’s that candy filled, scarying one another time of year again. Jacob and I don’t actually like this holiday but we do love that it’s a reminder of when we met, dressed up in costumes. Therefore, it has become one of our favorite celebratory times of the year. We made the meaning of this holiday about us versus remembering the dead. You didn’t know that’s what Halloween is about? Now you do. You can read more here on its origins. For now, I’m excited to share a few pictures of our family costumes over the years. I would also love to encourage you with a few tips on how to save money while shopping for Halloween costumes.

Tip 1: Buy costumes from second-hand stores.

The first photo you saw was of our first year’s tradition. It should be an obvious Wizard of Oz theme but you just never know, lol, we did make Jacob’s scarecrow costume! We searched high and low within our price range for our costumes and couldn’t find mine or his on budget. So we searched second-hand stores until we stumbled upon mine! This Dorothy dress was just hanging there looking all brand-new and so we purchased it. We spend a whole seven dollars too. Amazing right? I found the sparkling red flats at target for ten dollars. I re-used these for years around the holidays and on Disney trips! Lyianna’s lion costume was a gift from family and the inspiration for our themed tradition!

Tip 2: Shop your closet for items to ensemble a costume.

I did mention earlier that we made Jacob’s costume and here is why. We couldn’t find a scarecrow costume online, in stores (not even second-hand). So we turned to his closet and picked out what would work best. We spent one dollar on straw and stuffed it around his neck, wrists and ankles. When all else fails see what you already have at home because you may surprise yourself and save money too! When following this step I would suggest sticking to characters you naturally resemble in one or more ways. For example, pick characters that don’t require wigs, contacts or different skin color. Stick to characters in which you share the same hair color, length, etc. As most of you have already seen this is what I have been doing with the looks I have been sharing. The best part is that in its own way it will most likely be unique to your style!

Tip 3: Buy costumes from clearance sales right after Halloween!

I think we can all agree that costumes can be expensive even when utilizing the tips above. Sometimes consignment shops charge same prices as brand new items and making your own can become costly if we aren’t careful so if this is the case for anyone here is my last tip. Reserve some cash within your budget and a little patience. Wait a until a couple of days after Halloween to go shopping for next year’s costume. Prices usually drop and become clearance sales. This is what we did last year and we are excited that the wait is finally over. We will be wearing the costumes this year. I can tell you right now that it cost us a total of forty dollars for our little family and they are brand new!

I hope this helps! Feel free to ask any questions about any more details. i am more than happy to help!

Chills and thrills,

Ok so I thought I’d give y’all a freebie of who I dressed up as today. My daughter said no one would be able to guess, Vidia. Ring a bell for anyone? Well she is the wind fairy from Tinker Bell movies but with the lighting from today’s shoot dressing as Iridessa (the light fairy) would have been more fitting!

I chose Vidia for the colors. She has the darkest wardrobe of them all. Wearing darker colors is one of the easiest ways to dress for Autumn. It can take away half your time getting ready of you start with color, just FYI. Wearing boots is another easy investment into a fall outfit and I’ll talk a tiny bit about that tomorrow.

Until then we will be cuddling to Tinker Bell on repeat because now Camrielle loves the movie too. And how cute is Camrielle photo bombing? SOOO cute!

Mini Me Monday: Downtown Ft. Worth

I love this girl. She is the life of everything we do. Our conversations are always stimulating and her giggles contagious. There is never a dull moment with her around. In all of the joy of being in her presence that time together has lessened with school. I’m finding it challenging to spend one on one time between raising her little sister at home and taking care of our family. We have found a solution to our minor problem, lunch dates and photo shoots. Once a week I have the privilege of eating lunch with her at school and as often as possible taking photos together. Lyianna is having more of an artistic license on this blog too. She picked these looks out. Again, I am going to enjoy her desire to match as long as possible and in the meantime I look forward to this new normal.

Navy Ball & Disney Princess

Hello darlings! Don’t worry, I did not wear this dress to church, lol. However, I am not saying I would never do this, lol. Speaking of church, we didn’t even make it to church! We did live stream so we didn’t really miss anything. We watched from home in pajamas because we have been taking care of Camrielle. She woke up in the middle of the night with a high fever and looking just as red as this dress. It was a rough night to say the least but today is good. We have had such a busy week and even busier weekend that we are staying home today. Our bodies (especially hers) need rest.

Anyone resting assured in their guess of who I am dressed up as here? I will give you a clue, it is a Disney princess and I sure felt like royalty wearing this red beauty. Friday was the annual Navy Ball and it was fun! I love seeing my husbands colleagues and their wives dressed so elegantly. One of my closest friends, Lisa, and I hired a makeup artist and enjoyed being pampered hours before. It is always so much more fun to get ready with another girlfriend. There is so much joy in it.

There is also joy in the process of finding that right dress, shoes, jewelry and hair do. It can also be surprisingly stressful! I actually had another two dresses for this occasion but they didn’t fit quite. One fit almost perfectly until I tried to sit down. Jake actually taught me this, lol. The other dress was two big just days before the event and I had no time to have it tailored. Thankfully, just three days before our fancy date I found this gem. I was so grateful because it was a perfect fit, I could actually sit down in it AND it coordinated perfectly with my “dressing up” as characters this month. Don’t you agree and see?

Lyianna and Camrielle,

I have enjoyed these Navy balls with daddy so much. You both have been to just as many as me too! My first Navy ball, Camrielle, well you were in the womb and Lyianna you were dressed up as Cinderella. You actually wore your Disney Cinderella dress to the ball, lol. I hope these are just as of sweet memories as they are for me. I love you both!

Finally Fall

Sunglasses: Nine West | Cardigan: Gap | Tank: Forever 21 | Jeans: Old Navy | Shoes: Converse

Is this for reals? Is it finally actually Fall? I don’t think I believe it. I will, however, take this opportunity to wear a cardigan! I picked my beach cardigan just in case this cold front is a joke. I don’t want to get caught sweating later if the heat comes back. This is also why I chose white jeans. I am prepared for it warming up and this fifty-five degree weather. I’m definitely praying for the latter.

Oh, if you are still wondering who my Sunday character was you can check that post now and find out!

Hey y’all! This month here on Sundays in Style it’s going to be a little different and hopefully a little fun too. Lyianna and I were planning out her and Camrielle’s costumes this month when she suggested I use what I had in my closet for mine. She thought (and I agreed) that it would be fun to make people guess who I was since it was not an actual costume. Therefore, inspired by my daughter Lyianna and in honor of October being the dress up month, I’ll be incognito!

Each look will be my every day style’s version of characters from some of my favorite movies and shows. I will also tackle how to do this with what is already in my closet. I guess you can say it is my DIY costumes for every day! Your job is to have fun trying your best to guess who I am and maybe find some inspiration too. You can leave your answer in the comments below! At the end of each day I will add a photo to the post of who I am and I promise it will get easier as the month goes on.

So, who do you think I am today!?
